So the Tate St Festival was two weeks after the ButterBean show, and I'm definitely glad I went!

To start, I knew I'd need a canopy, so I checked around to find the cheapest one I could, and scored one for $40 at target... or so I thought. Well, turns out, it's a damned good thing I got a canopy because it rained the entire day of the festival. Lightly, mind you, but when you work on paper, rain is your enemy. And, turns out, the canopy I bought had leaks. Plural. And some of my stuff got dripped on pretty bad. There are two prints I'm probably gonna put up cheap on etsy under the 'scratch and dent' heading, as I don't feel I can sell them at full price. And, to their credit, target took the crappy canopy back for a full refund.

Despite the crappy weather, the show was still a lot of fun, and there was pretty good turnout. I didn't make as many connections at the show. I did take a look around, and I saw some stuff I liked, but most of it was by people I knew, ha! A girl I went to school with, Tristan was there and had some really awesome work. Hana bought one of her paintings, which I was happy to see. And SJ([info]shinychocoholic) WAS THERE, WOO!! Man, I feel bad, I have not done a good job of keeping up with her, and I was blown away by how cool the work she's doing now is, heh. I totally scored a pack of cute monster cards from her. Totally SJ awesomeness. (Hey SJ, you got a site you want me to send the unwashed denizens, to?) There was another girl who had some reaaaaaally nice hand-paintings on jeans and jackets. I didn't get her card, though, damnit.

So, I didn't make many connections, but I did in fact sell a bunch, so the day was plenty profitable, and paid for the first round of drinks that night, which felt nice, as I am so rarely able to do that :) Hana and I hung out with Josh[info]joshtothemax and Laura[info]alethalruby, which was a ton of fun, heh :) And we walked to McCouls for drinks that night. Ahhhhh, meeeeeemmorriiiiies.

So yeah, show was good, the night was good, I'll definitely go back to do Tate St again :) woo!

Ok, more later.
-P.

OH, WAIT, NO, THERE'S MORE. I totally forgot, Brian Sinclair[info]sebejias dropped by and gave me an AAAAAWWESOME present--a while back I sent him some art and he etched it into some small brass plates, then filled the lines with black paint. I never got a chance to get them from him, but he had them with him at the festival and I finally have these two AWESOME little plates of my artz! Thanks a ton, Brian! They're awesome. I've gotta try that technique one of these days. You know, when they make days long enough for there to actually be time for everything, heh :)

So, about those Shows...

So, I'm home sick from work today. Dunno what I've got but I know it blows goats. Going to the doctor in an hour or so.

But, in the meantime, I wanted to post about those shows, and plug some really awesome people, who really deserve to get plugged (pun may or may not be intended).

ButterBean Arts Market, Huntersville, NC
So, this show was over a month ago already, yeesh. It was held at a small, local, organic grocery grocery, and there was a $20 entry fee. There was a great artist turnout.... and a really puny customer turnout, unfortunately. The general consensus among us artist types was that they probably made more off our entry fees than they did selling produce that day.

Now, charging a fee for vendor space is standard operating procedure for this kind of event, but generally, the events which charge for space are established enough that a certain level of traffic is guaranteed. I don't know this for sure, but I gather this was both a new arts market and a new store in general, so perhaps they simply haven't built up their client base yet. Maybe in a few months it'll be better. So, didn't make any money, and neither did anybody else, but I'd be flat out lying if I called the day a wash, because I met some AAAAAAWESOME people.

Right next to me was a young couple Hannah and her husband Mark, and Hannah's sister Amy. Hannah had some fucking INCREDIBLE work, haha. Seriously, she had these AWESOME construction paper cut-outs diarama things that looked like stills from old macabre horror flicks or novellas. She also had severed limbs, roadkill animals, sugar skulls and organs in jars--ALL made out of felt and cloth. Seriously, you have to check her work out on etsy: The Friendly Misanthrope. I traded her a woodcut and a plush toy for one of her plush toy sugarskulls and a papercut. The papercut I gave to *my* Hana, though the next time I see her I'm totally trading for another one, haha.

Her sister Amy had really awesome paintings, sort of a little touch of folk art, with a little touch of the decorative. I really liked them, and the detail she puts into them I could stare at for hours! Check her out!

Next up was Eric Huskins of Electric Blanket Art. He had a bunch of really rad, short and sweet acrylic paintings, totally graphic, totally funny, totally man-of-my-own-heart kinda stuff. I traded him a Blinky print for a painting of a blue piggy bank pig with flames on the side, AWESOME.

Aaaand let's see, I also met this rad dude, Mike, who is also a screenprinter, and makes his living basically just selling his own quick 'n dirty designs on ebay. Not exactly what I wanna be doing, it was really really good talking some shop with him and getting some ideas on ways to bring in extra money with this whole printing thing. He was there supporting his girlfriend who had some stuff yall might like. Check him out here, and her out there!

So yeah, what the day lacked in monetary return, it made up for 100 fold in contacts, trades and good times. It also became clear that if I was to continue doing shows outside, I would *have* to invest in a canopy--I was the only artist there without one--also the only artist to end the day with a sunburned neck, heh. More on that in a bit, though.

I guess... maybe I'll try the ButterBean show out again in a few months, but for now I don't have any immediate plans to go back.

Ok, that's more than enough info for this post. I'll post about the Tate St Festival in a second.

Also....

I will bring my camera with me to art shows.

Ok, I'm really tired and need to head to bed, so I'll just knock out this one more quick post.

I'm trying to jump on every show opportunity I hear about these days. I just did the First Friday event at Salvador Deli this past friday. And I sold a t-shirt, and a print, so I walked away with more money than I had before, but... Hmm.. it seems that while a few months ago, most of the artists were actually INSIDE the Salvador patio, they're now congregating across the street, which is rad, because they get lots of foot traffic. The problem is that the only *light* over there is street light, which doesn't really show off the color of anyone's work. I need to scout around over there and see if I can find an outlet on the side of a building folks could plug into, and then maybe I'd join them over there, because the people at Salvador this time were there to see the band, not to look at art, and also, I was the only visual artist setup there, which you'd have thought would help my odds, but no dice. BUT, I've just gotten word that the Neighborhood Theatre wants to start having artists show work inside on nights they have free shows, so that might be another option for first fridays.

I'm doing another show up in Huntersville (about 20 minutes north of where I live in Charlotte) this saturday, from 9am-2pm, so if you're up for it, come on out and see me! It'll be at the ButterBean Village Market. Hopefully it'll be a lot of fun!

And then, later this month, I'm scheduled to do the Tate St Festival in Greensboro. A LOT of you on my friends list should know about that one, heh. It'd never occurred to me to do it before, but now it makes total sense. And it'll be really good to see Jaime Coggins (the organizer) again. I used to volunteer for her at her gallery when it first opened up. Anyway, that's scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, I believe. I'll post about it again. There should be another show or two in october, dates tba!

Ok, I sleep now, and post more tomorrow probably, cuz I gots more to show yall!

BritToni Wedding Shirts

So dig, one of my good friends from college is getting married this weekend. (And I'm a groomsman again. Do ya believe it? You think people would learn the first time!)

Anyway. They wanted shirts for the wedding party, so I made it happen. Brittain did the designs, I did the printing. Navy blue Union Aerotex ink (not my favorite) on standard ass gildan shirts.

They came out lookin pretty good!

Haven't been on LJ much lately. Seems my life's been running on the philosophy of "I'll sleep when I'm dead." Pretty much every weekend for the last month or so Hana and I have been either at the beach, or in the mountains, or doing stuff with folks here in charlotte, on top of each of our various creative tinkerings we're doing at home.

I did an art show in Matthews a couple weeks back that was fun, and profitable even if it was small and in the boonies. lol, and Cougar. As far as the eye could see.

Saw Dar Williams in concert at a festival in Asheville.

Been at my job a year now.

Oh, and I'm planning on buying a car. Probably in september. Give or take. My car is due up for inspection then, and I'll be amazed if it'll pass without a hefty bribe. Actually, that probably deserves its own post.

Anyway, yeah, been up to a lot. Later.

Holy Hellbuckets, what a weekend!

So dig me, a week or two ago, I got an email saying that Laurence (the lead guy of the band who played at the Arts Market back in December) was organizing a regular art event at Salvador Deli (a fucking FANTASTIC sandwich and beer shop) in NoDa for first fridays, and it was kicking off this weekend. So I called him and reserved a spot. Basically, 12+ local artists crammed themselves into the parking lot and patio at Salvador Deli hawking our delightful wares whilst a couple local bands played on stage. It was a great fucking time!

Heh, and apparently, I was on Fox News (local) friday night, hahhaah. As we were setting up Friday afternoon, two young guys, one with a camera, one with a mic, came into the patio and started talking to people. They were trying to do a story for the news that night about how social networking sites affect businesses. So I got interviewed about that and about whether I thought they were a distraction at work. I don't have internet access all day at work, so it's kind of a non-issue for me, but I tried to get across that sure they're a distraction, but so is ANY website.

Gotta tell ya I feel a little dirty being on fox news, ha.

And, at some point during the night, a guy named Brennan came up to me and asked if I wanted to come back out for an event they were throwing there saturday night and set up again. I was pretty socially exhausted but decided to do it. So, saturday I drove back down and set up again. It was a different crowd, but still a lot of fun people to hang out with, and I sold some stuff too, so score :) There was live hoola hooping too!

I'm finding that I really like the 'art festival' context for displaying my art. I dunno, there's no pretense, trying to make things seem fancier than they are. Everyone's there, relaxed, having some beers and having a good time. It just feels right for what I guess I'm trying to do. Props to Jen H, Chris, Katja and Ben, Laurence, Swink, DAG, Stuart (of Salvador Deli) and everybody else involved! Thanks Chris, Becca, Rachel, Devin, Boyd and Billy for coming out!

Hamazing!

I made a rubber stamp business card. Hahaha!

"Rubber Stamps™! When you absolutely GOT to have a business card in no time flat!" Hot. Hand Printed. HAMazing. Hehehe, this makes me chuckle. I probably drew and carved the whole thing in under an hour. It was super rushed and not as nice looking as it could have been. Maybe I'll do a nicer linocut version at some point, scan and screenprint a batch of 1-color cards from it.

All Arts Market!
Phew, gonna be tired tomorrow, but I really wanna get all this out :)

So, the art festival was December 10th, and holy crap it was AAAWWWWESOME!!! Shannon (of NoDaRioty) had the Neighborhood Theater PACKED OUT with 90+ local artists who did all kinds of different work. It was an absolute blast to get to walk around and see what kind of work my peers here in town are doing. We've got some good stuff going on!

I left my table several times and went around meeting the folks whose work I liked the best. I gave out a ton of business cards (more on that in a sec), but unfortunately, I only got like 2 or 3 in return, so I don't have a way to get in touch with most of the folks I met :( I still need to email the cute hippy chick I met who had a bunch of print work and was wanting to learn how do more. These folks were pretty friggin awesome. Oooh! And to top it off, there was a cash bar, and my favorite deli (Salvador Deli) was there selling sandwiches to boot!

La BandaThe throng of patrons. The throng of patrons. The throng of patrons.

The event had live music the whole time--a local band was there playing the whole time, and I actually really enjoyed it. It was pretty eclectic as there were a lot of members that sort of came and went as they pleased, so a lot of different styles were represented. They were playing a lot of funk, almost hip hop towards the end of the night. The only downside was that there were artists packed into the theater all the way up to the stage, meaning that talking to patrons was almost impossible for artists close to the stage-----like I was, hahaha. It's all good, though. It was disappointing to have that hindrance, but I really enjoyed the music, and danced right there at my booth.

I really enjoyed this particular festival and will absolutely participate the next time they do one, but I also really enjoyed the festival context in general as a way to show my work and meet people. It's something I'd like to do a lot more often :)

A bunch more awesome stuff--Cameron and Becca helping me do business cards, and the movie party, with pics! Cut for length. )

What's up, y'all?

So, dig this. There's a huge art festival going on THIS WEDNESDAY, December 10th from 6-10pm at the Neighborhood Theater in NoDa. This is a HUGE event, featuring 90 or so LOCAL artists, plus live performances by local bands, and best of all IT'S FREE!!!

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I've been so caught up in getting ready for it (and getting a badass poster ready for friday) that I'm just doing it now. I'm actually going to have a booth at this festival, along with my buddy Swink from work. It's going to be pretty badass.

Now, I understand that most of you--my charlotte friends--aren't really into art. I know this. But there's going to be a lot more at this event than just visual art. There's bound to be clothing, jewelry, wood working, and other cool handmade shit, so please, come out and support your local poor creative folks!!

THIS Wednesday, 6-10pm, Neighborhood Theater in NoDa--BE THERE!!!

So, also on Monday, Tim told me about an annual Day of the Dead art show at Pura Vida this weekend, and asked if I'd want to put anything in it. Fuck yes I would!

I'd had some other skull comps on the shelf I'd been trying to make something with for a while and decided to finish one of those. lol, and I realized, I had three days to do it.

The basic bits were done already; hand-carved rubber stamps done with oil based relief printing ink. I wanted to tea stain the whole thing (which I'd never done) so I went lookin for some tutorials. Of the ones I found, this one looked like it yielded the coolest results, and sure enough, it worked AWESOME. It wasn't quite dark enough the first time, so I gave it a second go.
First Coat of Tea StainSecond Coat of Tea Stain

I tried a couple different teas. I mostly used rooibos, because I had a bunch of it and I don't like it. It worked really well. Darjeeling on the other hand, didn't work well at all.

Going in, I figured I would put some color in with watercolor. The reality however, is that I suck at painting, and I really didn't think I'd be satisfied with the results if I did it that way. But, I suddenly realized that if tea stains paper, that tea soaked in india ink would also stain paper, in color!

So, I heated some water, poured it into containers, and squirted in some india ink. I then let some tea bags soak up the tinted water for a while. Then, I spread the tea grounds around the composition where I wanted them, and let them soak in. I let them soak a little too long, and the red bled out across more of the composition than I would have liked, but c'est la vie.
Tinted Tea Grounds Spread on PaperCloseup of tea grounds.Closeup 2

Here's the piece after I washed off the tea grounds:

And here's some closeups:
Closeup of the tea stainingCloseup 2Closeup 3Closeup 4

That's about it. After all that was done, I let it dry, sandwiched between some cardboard, and under some heavy weight to keep it from warping. Then I drew in the remainder of the banner with a brush and india ink, and wrote in the text with a calligraphy marker. I then took it outside and burned the edges with a cigarette lighter.

I feel like it's still kinda busch-league, but I'm satisfied with it :)

And here's me at the reception saturday night. HAHAHAHA, LOOK AT THAT STACHE, AAAHAHAHA!

They put me right above this incredibly well done sugar skull by a local tattooist, Chris Stuart. He's mad good. The top-right skull is done by my friend Tim, and I don't know who did the piece below his, but it's incredibly cool.

The show was low key, but really nice. Not a ton of artwork, but mostly quality. There were some cuban musicians performing and they were great. They played El Carretero, which was awesome :)

Anyway, enjoy! Feel free to comment!

*Sigh* Free to good home?
This has been on my mind a lot lately. It's... just not working out having Nehai down here with me. I guess he's lonely, and bored, with me gone all day, and a roommate who stays in his room all the time. For every one moment where he's a sweet and playful catten, there are ten where he's a righteous pain in my ass. He's been getting increasingly aggressive with me, scratching and biting my feet without provocation, more aggressively trying to get into whatever food I'm eating, and more disruptive when I'm working on anything. Some have suggested getting a second cat, and that may well help, but I'm not sure it's the best solution when I anticipate the next 10 years of my life to involve a hell of a lot of traveling and moving around. I need to think about it more, but... I may start looking for a new home for him soon. If you know of someone who would give him a happy, loving, permanent home, ideally with other cats, let me know. Mm. This makes me kinda sad... but that's why this came first. The rest of the entry is an upper.

The Prodigal Son RETURNS!!!!
Hey Folks! I'm gonna be coming back to North Carolina for a few days this week! I'll be in town Thursday through Sunday. I *reaaaaallly* would love to see you guys while I'm there. So who's gonna be around and would want to get together? Also, would any of you Greensboro-ites be willing to collect me from Raleigh? I realize it's an hour and some change drive, but I'm going to be flying into NC, so I won't have my car. Anyway, comment, message, or call my cell to make plans!

PARTY OUT IN THE COUNTRY!!! SKEEEEEEEYEEEWWWW!!!!
Heh, so work is throwing another one of our big shindigs SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1ST!!! It's going to last all day; we're having 12 bands in 12 hours, including several I've seen live already and they're fucking great! All folk/bluegrass/rockabilly stuff. Papa D will be there grilling up his special brand of southern home-cookin' and my friend Susan will actually be helping him, and making some vegetarian chili. I'm postin' this because if any of you want to come down and visit, check out 'Bama and see the show, this would be a great time to do it, and I'd be glad to put you up for a night or two or three :) Come on down!

Old Time Music at Standard Deluxe

This place is really amazing. I'm not making much art (and that's ok), but I'm having such a great time down here and meeting so many new people.

About once a month, my boss throws these shindigs out at Standard Deluxe. We have two or three bands come in and play, we set up an area to sell shirts and posters, sometimes there will be an art exhibit, and there's always Dan Neal, aka Papa D with his big old grill set up, cooking up some good southern food. Hehe, here's a great little video of Dan talking about the event and rocking out, making a balloon animal. He's an awesome dude.

These events are wonderful, really a high point in the month for me. We had one last weekend, and although I had planned to go to New Orleans last weekend to visit Sarah[info]polyksena, when I found out we were having a shindig, I told her she had to come up here. It's out in the country, the Waverly locals come out (they're wonderful folks), there's great food, music and I get to have a few cold ones and talk to people all night.

So far I've been around for two of these. The first one, in August, we held the event in the actual print shop itself. We had two bands come out and play, the Buckrabbits from Birmingham and Roof Rabbit, some local boys. I've made friends with the bassists of each, though they're all great guys. Here's another video from the August shindig, of Roof Rabbit playing in the shop. Incidentally I got to see Roof Rabbits more fully last night--they were playing at my favourite bar. It was a great show.

This past weekend we had another one, up at the store this time, with some really cool paintings by local artist Andy Cost, a Papa D special fish fry, and music by the Alabama Gravy Soppers, Fall Line Frailers, and the Mafs (who I can't find a website for). The picture above is--I believe--the Fall Line Frailers, but I could be wrong.

More pics!

Ms Rigglesworth... Another crowd shot. Our sign, at night, after the shindig.

Like Papa D says, these events are about good music, fellowship and good food. They're beautiful things, and if any of you are thinking about visiting me here in the Heart of Dixie, these are really the weekends to do it.

PS - Oh yeah, the reception for the Multiples show was a total success. A lot of people came, a lot of contacts were made, people had a great time and all the food was eaten. Ha! My guac was gone in 30 minutes flat. Roy Nydorf, the teacher at guilford came, so I got to talk to him more, and got to meet his wife who is the curator at the guilford college art gallery. The head of the guilford art department, Adele Wayman, came as well and I got to meet her. I'm not... sure how serious she was, but she suggested that the next time we do a collaborative show like this, that it be hosted at guilford. I'm gonna email her and see if we can set it up!

The Multiple Faces of Multiples FlierI organized an exhibition of prints at the McIver Gallery at UNCG. The show is called The Multiple Faces of Multiples and runs from 16 February - 12 March, 2007. We're having a public reception for the work this coming thursday, 1 March, from 6:30-8:30pm at the McIver Gallery. If you can, you should come, the work is incredible. I feel really lucky to have gotten to work with such a talented group of people. Bill Fick came in and did a unique, 7' collaged installation of his prints. Bob Gerhart long time former UNCG professor submitted some old prints to the show. John Gall put some great collaged prints and what you might call a 'state' book in the show. Current and former grad students, some undergrads and some very talented kids from Guilford College all submitted work for the show and have made it what it is. I can't thank them enough. Photo Show THIS FRIDAY!!

Quick announcement:

My photo teacher Sarah organized a juried student photo exhibition that's opening THIS FRIDAY from 6-8. I've got at least one, possibly two pieces in it, and you should come see it. Especially YOU, Josh and Laura, since, well, you're in the pictures :)

The show is actually IN the art building, in the gallery space on the the first floor.

The art building is located near the corner of Tate and Spring Garden St. It's actually directly on Highland St, which is the next street into Spring Garden, parallel to Tate. If you need any more info, drop a line.

See you there!

What the HELL was that last post about?

So, yeah, that last post probably didn't make ANY sense. But that's because I'm a slacker when it comes to posting news about life.

So, on the ground floor of the old art building, there was a gallery space. The Teaching and Learning Center has moved into that space now, but they want to keep using part of the space as a gallery to show artwork. So, I stepped up to get those shows organized. It's pretty cool, I'll get a tonne of experience, plus 2 hours of class credit; it counts as ART393 (internship).

So anyway, I thought it would be pretty cool to do a comic and illustration exhibit for the first show; it's something you don't normally see in a gallery (something considered--by some, not me--to be below gallery art), and I hope it'll get people interested in coming through that space.

So, to that end, if you make comics or illustrative artwork and would like to put some up for display, leave a comment or send me an email, let's get it up on the walls.

More later,
-P.

*snrrrk* mo chedda... HA!

Anyway. So, this is pretty cool. I've been showing my work every couple of weeks at the local art gallery on Tate St since about february. In the last few months I've been volunteering to work the gallery one day a week so the owner Jaime can have a day off. About a month ago, someone from the local weekly Yes! wrote an article about the space, and I was mentioned in it!

In that way Coggins is less a curator than a teacher. She sets deadlines and guidelines for the shows, gently introducing would-be exhibitors to the professional art world.

As we speak, Phillip Lagas Rivera, a beneficiary of her tutelage, walks by. The UNCG student first showed his work at the Space and now does so extensively. He also watches the gallery on weekends.

“I’ve seen his work improve tremendously over the time he’s shown here,” Coggins says.

Click the text to read the full article. I really wouldn't classify my relationship to Jaime as student-teacher, but I can see what the writer was getting at. They also spelled my name wrong.

In related news, someone from the News & Record is going to be writing a story about The Space this coming week, so Jaime has been specifically calling around looking for people to submit good work for the show and I'm one of the people she called. w00t for connections!

Printmaking
Hey guys, my friend Phoebe just messaged me to let me know that she's in charge of the EUC gallery now, and she wants to hang a show of printmaking works this coming week. She's going to be hanging the show around the middle of the week, and she needs submissions! The show is free to submit, and this is a decently long show; it should be up for a  month or so. The works do not have to be framed (many works, likely including mine, will be unframed).

If you want to submit work, drop me a line and I'll put you in touch with her.

This is gon' be awesome!!!!

Independent Study Show Flier
This Friday night my independent study class is having a public exhibition of our work at the 327 MLK gallery here in greensboro. Even though it's for a class, the work is still being shown in a public gallery, so I'd love for you all to come. It's THIS friday, from 7-9pm. It's free, there will be food. The exhibition this friday will be mostly painting, with prints from me and Betsey (she's wicked good). Please come out and see us :)
