Fourth piece, Of Four

  • Jan. 11th, 2006 at 7:54 AM
Gollum Sam
Lady In Red

I'm getting this piece back from my life drawing teacher today, so I'll be spending my afternoon matting and framing it. The piece is going into a black frame. I'm having a hard time deciding what colour mat to use, but I'm leaning towards black. Use the poll below to cast your vote.

Edit: I'm also still trying to decide if I want to sell this piece, and if so, for how much. Time/materials comes to ~$150, so I'm thinking $250 or $300 as a minimum. Hehe, I *like* the piece enough though that I'm thinking of charging something really exorbanant for it, so that if someone buys it, it'll probably be because they like it as much as I do.

Independent Study

I'm feeling torn about what I want to do in my independent study class this Spring. I intended to work on The Shallow End and produce one strip per week, but now I'm leaning heavily towards doing more relief printmaking. I really want to further explore that medium. I'd like to try actually using wood instead of linoleum for once, do some colour reduction cut prints, maybe some embossings, or even some small wood reliefs (examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4). I know some will be disappointed if I don't do TSE regularly, but that's the breaks; I'm too new to art to pigeon-hole myself in one medium just yet.

Well, what do you all think? (Hehe, the results of this poll will have no bearing on what I actually do this semester, but this was a fun excuse to use one of my new paid lj features. *grin*)

Ganked from [info]flemco

[info]flemco linked this a while back. It's an interesting article in two parts.

Part 1: What it's like to be an atheist
Part 2: Why the author is an atheist

It's long, but an interesting read. Note: I'm not putting this up for propaganda, I just think it's a genuinely interesting read for both sides. I don't really call myself an atheist anymore, but I don't really contest it if someone calls me one.

Anti-drug commercials

I can't help but wonder if the people who make anti-drug commercials actually believe they work. Surely someone has informed that the more they tell kids drugs are bad, the more kids are going to want to do them.

Look guys, you want to get teens to stop smoking pot? Run a commercial with some kids sitting around smoking a joint with their parents. BAM!!! Teen marijuana use drops 80% over night.

Just a thought.

Jarhead

Does anyone else think that Jarhead looks good? I'm really not a fan of war movies, but it looks decent. It's got the guy from Donnie Darko, and the director of American Beauty. That's two plusses right there.

Mundanity

I think I'm finally starting to accept that my LJ is a mundane place. Oh well.

I saw DOOM this weekend. I went in expecting something as bas as Scorpion King.* It was definitely bad, but not "OMGKILLMEPLS!" bad. The Rock's acting was abysmal. His best delivered line throughought the entire film was "Holy Shit!" after discharging the BFG for the first time. Three or four of the actors actually had good performances. Despite its divergence from the game, it had a pretty decent story. I thought the lead scientist's name being Carmack was a pretty cute touch, hehe. Anyway, if you're a fan of the game, or tempted to see it, it's probably worth matinee price, or at least a rental.

Oooooh GOD this is going to be a busy week:
  • Quiz today in my hardest class
  • A friend's birthday gathering tuesday
  • Digital design project due wednesday
  • Italian renaissance exam wednesday
  • Class registration wednesday night
  • Major drawing assignment due thursday
  • Go to the grocery store so I don't starve
  • Go to CVS

Ack. Stress: On. I'm going to skip my first class today to get started.

Edit: I forgot to include a positive thought: I'm finally getting to use one of my 18x24" linoleum sheets!!! :)

*- I didn't want to see SK; a friend got some bad information that it was directed by someone good. Holy hell it blew.

My opinion, nothing more.

You know, I really like Applegeeks, but goddamn Hawk has a thing or two to learn about comic layout. Gads.

How do you say 'crap' in Japanese?

As some of you know, I'm not a fan of anime. The stories seldom interest me and I don't like the art at all. Much like the old Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, the art is stylized and conventionalized to the point that it looks mostly the same, and differences between the work of different artists are frequently negligible. Er, anyway, this is completely digressing from what I wanted to talk about.

I like to try new things. I like to keep an open mind. Tonight, I paid money to go see Howl's Moving Castle with my roommate. It was made by the same guy as Spirited Away, which sucked, so I was wary of the film, but I kept an open mind.

The movie was... enjoyable; I felt for the characters, I laughed quite a bit. The movie was, however, from start to finish, a total, unmitigated plagiarism of The Wizard of Oz. Just like WoZ and Spirited Away, the movie was essentially juvenile escapist fantasy, and I hated that aspect of it. The art was... alright. I really liked the backgrounds, which were beautifully painted, but the figures were still too heavily stylized, and the 'anime eyes' bugged me. Or, perhaps it's more appropriate to say they simply bugged.
