Gift Meme Results

So, about a month ago, I signed up for a meme committing me to make something for the first six people who signed up. I ended up doing a little more than that, but it's ok. These are the results.

First up, for Jenn [info]pac, a new headband, since her manfriend Richard [info]vomitsaw stole the last one I made for her. This one's a little more fancy than that though; I took the opportunity to redraw her horns, and add a decorative stitched border around the front. Er... and ignore that huge spot in the hem where I clearly fucked up, lol. Modelled by my roommate Jen.

Next up, iPod cases for four lovely people: Ali [info]mckenzee, Josh [info]joshtothemax, Laura [info]alethalruby, and Aubrey [info]spookyelectric1. Note the custom hand-screenprinted designs on Josh and Aubrey's ;) Fun stuff :) And, I fixed the tops on Josh and Laura's so they don't look quite so fucking bobo now.

For Lisa [info]mishmashed, who requested not an iPod case, but a woodcut, I made this, heh. I haven't had a chance to print it yet, but I should be doing that one night this week. Once it's printed, I'll watercolor it or tea paint it. The image is flipped, so you can read the text. This was a hell of a lot of fun to make actually. I haven't worked much with wood, and when I have it's always been a nightmare. But I carved pretty much all this in the "proper" way, using a single blade and carving out each line individually, rather than just using U and V gouges like I would with linoleum.

And, for my friend Tim, I drew up this pretty wicked skull and screenprinted it to some purple fabric and sewed up him up a case. I've gotten a lot better at making these. In the end, it turns out that while machine sewing is fine for the inner and outer linings, to stitch the top in place, I pretty much have to hand-sew it if I want good results. I discovered this doing Aubrey's, which was too small to even attempt machine sewing. I've got some more cupcakes and skulls printed to a couple different fabrics. I may sew up some more of these and try selling them on etsy.

Anyway, gotta run to work, but wanted to share these.

Later, yall!

I don't usually do these, but I thought my answer to this one was a bit unusual. It's from this.

1. Grab the book closest to you.
2. Open it on page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Copy the next three sentences into your blog.
5. Tag five people.

Still have more stuff to post, here and on etsy, but not doing it tonight, and probably not in the morning. Going to Smyrna to hang out with Nick[info]tenmazero this weekend. Have a good one, y'all!

Pay It Forward -- PAID!

Woohoo!!! Allrighty, my Pay It Forward gifts are all but done and ready to be mailed. I'm gonna take them into work on Monday and trim the edges off and they'll be 100% done. If you're one of the people who commented to receive one, I'll need your address. There should be an email address in my userinfo you can use. So, here's what I made. Whaddya think? Two-layer, colour linocut, 5x7".

Here are a few other colour variations. I made a lot more than 5 of these, and pretty much every one has a different set of colours. These are just 5 of my favs. On that second one, I actually printed it in a yellow/orange blend first, but the inks were super-transparent and didn't really show up. So, I went back and printed it again in black, slightly offset. The resulting drop shadow is AWESOME!

A while back I actually bought some little baby shirts to print on, but never got around to it. I thought my card image might look cool on it, but I wasn't sure it would work. I gave it a shot and sure enough!!!! The registration isn't great, but it looks really neat. Now the problem is I don't know anyone with a baby young enough for this to fit!!! Hm... Bill Fick just had a kid, I'm not sure how big it is yet though.

Susan at the River
Sunset
While I was working on these, I also used some excess ink I had to do a couple monotypes. This was a neat technique I first saw demonstrated by Katherine McGinn. (You should check out her husband Andy Farkas's work, too!) You basically lay out a thin sheen of ink on a surface, lay paper over it and trace out an image into the back of the paper. The paper is pressed into the ink in those spots and gives a neat texture. These are kind of... memories of things in alabama--sunsets on the drive home from work, and going to the river with Susan, with colour blends chosen from those events. A little artsy fartsy, but neat nonetheless.

Hey! Pay it Forward folks! Your gift is done!!! I made a bunch of little Alabama postcards! The ink is still drying on the last few, so they won't be mailed till sometime next week. They're really neat. I varied up the colours throughout, so each one is a little bit different. There are two layers. The background really jumps out from a distance, and the foreground is best viewed up close, so it's pretty successful from wherever it's viewed. Not my best carving, admittedly, but I'm happy with the project as a whole.

Anybody want a hand printed Graduation Announcement? Free?
Now, speaking of cards, remember my graduation announcements I printed up in May? Well, I've still got a whole box of them sitting here collecting dust, and I'd love for anyone who wants one to have one. FREE. So, if you'd like one, just email me or leave your address in a comment and I'll mail you one. FREE! (Pay it forward folks, I'll probably stick one in your envelope regardless). If anyone wants to make small donations to cover the mailing of a few, I'll gladly take them, but that's completely optional. If you want a grad announcement, just tell me where to mail it, and it's yours :)

Pay It Forward

Hey Pay it Forward folks, good news! Your gift is in the works! You'll be receiving a lovely 2-colour linocut, for which I finished carving the blocks this past weekend and started printing tonight! Woohoo!

OH man, this felt good. This is the first art that I've made since school ended. I've been in a weird, meek headspace where any time I wanted to make art, I got so tense I nearly had a panic attack. To have accomplished this feels very, very cathartic, and I'm all fired up now and want to keep going!

It'll probably be a few weeks yet before you guys receive these. I'll finish printing the first layer sometime this week, and then I'll want to let the ink dry a few days before printing the second layer, then they'll need a solid week to dry after that. Score!!!!

Not much to report elsewhere in life. Things have been fairly quiet, but good. There might be a Melange post in a few days. We'll see.

Yah, I think memes are reaaaaaally dumb, but I got curious, put my name in this one, and was way too amused by the results not to repost it:

Haven't posted in like two weeks, I know. Trying to keep my head above water; get caught up in the two classes I'm behind in, look for a new place to live, research options for after graduation, plus do my part to breathe a bit more life into the uncg printmaking program.

Anyway, I thought this was awesome:

Give me one reason I'm going to hell.

Then post this request in your LJ, and I will tell you why YOU are doomed to eternal damnation.

Jennie Breeden Jennie Breeden
Jennie Breeden, requested by [info]cha0ss. Not a bad sketch, beyond, you know, not looking anything like her, hehe. The figure isn't bad, though, considering how long it's been. Anyway, I'll try to work on everyone else's tomorrow.

Jenn, I really wish I drew as well as you. Maybe one day.

Nehai sleeping
Here's my little kitten asleep on my bed. Requested by Carrie[info]snowmentality. Jesus it's been too long since I worked from observation. Need to get back to that. Need to work with colour more, too.
Nehai sleeping sketch
I actually did this sketch first. I wanted to go with this pose, but Nehai wouldn't hold still, and changed positions as soon as I got the basic figure down.

By the way, I think I have the least photogenic cat in the world. Nehai has grown up to be a really beautiful cat, but jesus christ I cannot get a single good picture of him. However, I'll post some of him soon.

That's right...

the first ten people to comment on this post get to request a doodle from me on a subject/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this meme in their journal.

... I went there

hell you know what, forget the obligation to do the thing in your own journal. it would still be nice though.

Please note, I haven't drawn much since the semester ended, and I've done barely any figurative work since January; these sketches are going to be rough.

I always feel embarassed posting these things. This one could be interesting, though.

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want—good or bad—BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE.

When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people DON'T ACTUALLY remember about you.
